Driven by pressure from the provincial government’s Food and Organic Waste Framework last year, the City of Ottawa is debating making green bin programs mandatory at multi-residential dwellings, according to a recent article from the CBC. The City launched a voluntary green bin program nine years ago, but only 29 per cent, or 500 of approximately 1,700 buildings, are participating in the program.
The program is meeting some resistance, especially from landlords of older highrises that were built before recycling and composting programs. Buildings have been able to accommodate recycling programs, but at the cost of tenant parking spots, which affects revenue. However, some tenants are pushing for green bin programs in order to be more sustainable.
The City is planning on crafting a multi-residential waste strategy as it develops its 30-year master plan for solid waste.
