The City of Ottawa retained McIntosh Perry to provide engineering services for the expedited rehabilitation of several catch basin leads along Colonel By Drive from Mount Pleasant Avenue to the south end of the wall section near Avenue Road. The project directly impacted the Rideau Canal, a National Historic Site of Canada, Canadian Heritage River and UNESCO World Heritage Site, McIntosh Perry completed a Cultural Heritage Impact Statement (CHIS) prior to the start of construction.
Following guidance produced by the City of Ottawa, Parks Canada, the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM), and Canada’s Historic Places, the scoped CHIS included a background on the purpose and requirements of this scoped CHIS and outlines the cultural heritage significance and character-defining elements of the Rideau Canal. It also described the proposed rehabilitation and assessed the potential impacts to the Rideau Canal’s character-defining elements and provided recommendations for future action and mitigation measures.
