The culvert is located on Highway 15, within the City of Kingston, approximately 2km north of Highway 15 and Sandhill Road junction (north of Joyceville).
The watercourse associated with the culvert is an unnamed tributary of Rideau Canal between River Stix and Cranberry Lake. The watercourse was found to represent a backwater wetland area directly connected to the main canal channel.
The existing 65-year-old culvert had been submerged for years and was at the end of its service life. This unique project involved challenging foundation conditions. Peat and very loose sand, highly compressive and liquifiable material, was present up to 6m below the culvert base. The narrow causeway restricted staging options, and the excavation required the design of a robust shoring system. The watercourse was classified as exceptional baitfish fish habitat and in-water work was only allowed after August.
McIntosh Perry’s structural, environmental, traffic and construction professionals collaborated to make this $3M project, that required unconventional engineering, a reality.
