McIntosh Perry was retained by the City of Barrie to provide detailed design services for the rehabilitation of the Big Bay Point Road Painswick Bridge. The structure carries two lanes of westbound traffic over the Metrolinx corridor in the City of Barrie. The structure was constructed in the mid-1970s, having undergone a previous rehabilitation in 1996. The structure was twinned in 2007, adding two more lanes and converting the existing structure to carrying only westbound traffic. The scope of work for this project is concrete patch repair to various deteriorated areas including parapet walls, concrete deck, sidewalk, soffit, and abutments; semi-integral conversion to remove the existing expansion joints; and bearing replacement. As the structure is over an active rail corridor, McIntosh Perry engaged with Metrolinx about how to best carry out the assignment to be able to achieve the target goals of our client, while also adhering to the requirements of the rail authority.

McIntosh Perry incorporated the necessary rail timing restrictions and clearance windows into the contract, as well as including clear operational constraints which spoke to any other rail restrictions. The structure will be closed during construction, with one-lane of traffic in each direction being maintained on the twin structure to the south. This will be achieved by the partial removal of the raised center median and placement of temporary asphalt to allow the traffic crossover. In the final stage of construction, the centre median will be reinstated. This project involved the coordination of utilities including aerial hydro, as well as aerial communications (Rogers) and buried communications (Bell) in the approaches and bridge median. Coordination with all utilities was required throughout the job to ensure the work could take place without issue or delay due to utilities.
