Project: Amazon Fulfillment Centre YYZ4
Challenge: This 850,000 square foot centre is Amazon’s first Canadian fulfillment warehouse equipped with high-tech robotics. Square-shaped robots move around the floor, picking up moveable shelves that contain inventory. We provided structural engineering services, including design and review.
Solution from McIntosh Perry: The weight and movement of the robots had to be taken into account, so we provided a sophisticated design to accommodate the dynamic weight of the robots and inventory shelves.
Impact: Our design allowed the fulfillment centre to use the innovative robotic technology, which brought a number of benefits to Amazon’s business:
- Instead of Amazon associates spending hours walking around to collect products for an order, the inventory comes to them in minutes.
- The warehouse can have more space for products, as it doesn’t require aisles.
- Orders can be shipped to the consumer faster, helping secure repeat orders.
