Project: Amazon Fulfillment Centre YYZ4

Challenge: This 850,000 square foot centre is Amazon’s first Canadian fulfillment warehouse equipped with high-tech robotics. Square-shaped robots move around the floor, picking up moveable shelves that contain inventory. We provided structural engineering services, including design and review.

Solution from McIntosh Perry: The weight and movement of the robots had to be taken into account, so we provided a sophisticated design to accommodate the dynamic weight of the robots and inventory shelves.

Impact: Our design allowed the fulfillment centre to use the innovative robotic technology, which brought a number of benefits to Amazon’s business:

  1. Instead of Amazon associates spending hours walking around to collect products for an order, the inventory comes to them in minutes.
  2. The warehouse can have more space for products, as it doesn’t require aisles.
  3. Orders can be shipped to the consumer faster, helping secure repeat orders.
