New Noise Regs For Ontario Workplaces
Starting July 1, 2016, you’ll have to turn down the muzak. The new noise regulation, Ont. Reg. 381/15, under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, is intended to help workers from noise-induced hearing loss. The regulation now covers construction sites, health care facilities, schools, amusement parks, farming operations, police and fire services. It replaces existing regulations that cover industrial facilities, mines, and the offshore oil and gas industry.
Under the new regs, employees exposure to noise will be limited to 85 decibels over the course of an eight-hour shift. The onus is on the employer to ensure that proper measures are taken to protect employees from noise damage.
